The Costa Vineyard was planted in 1998, in the mountain town of Comptche. Comptche is located ten miles due east of the coastal town of Little River, and is at the 600 foot elevation. Sixty five percent of the five acre Pinot Noir vineyard is planted with the Pommard clone; the remaining thirty five percent is planted with the Dijon #115 clone. Because of the mountain location the grape tonnage yields are low, and never exceed two tons of fruit per acre. The afternoon marine influence slows the ripening of the fruit, so harvest usually takes place in the latter part of October.
The Pommard clone provides a great foundation of fruit flavors that we build on, and the addition of the Dijon #115 clone gives the finished wine its wonderful aromatics!
